Supporting information FAQs

What is supporting information?

  • Important, ancillary information, which is relevant to the parent article but cannot (and does not) appear in the print (or online) version of the journal.
  • It may comprise additional tables, data sets, figures, movie files, audio clips, 3D structures, and other related nonessential multimedia files.

Do the files need to be original?

  • Yes, the materials must be original and not previously published. If previously published, please provide the necessary permissions.
  • You may also display your supporting information on your own or institutional website. Such posting is not subject to the journal's embargo date as specified in the copyright agreement.

Which version should I provide?

  • You must provide the supporting information in its final format – as not copyedited, checked or changed from its original format. It will not be available for review prior to publication.
  • The responsibility for scientific accuracy and file functionality remains entirely with the author(s). A disclaimer to this effect is displayed with any published supporting information.

How do I label the information?

  • Label all files clearly as "Supporting Information" (e.g., use SuppInfo, Supp, in the filename; example - Figure_6_SuppInfo.pdf).
  • All supporting information must include a legend stating what it is, as well as the format.

What file/size format should I use?

  • Restrict individual file sizes to 10Mb or less (zipped or unzipped) as larger files can lead to "download issues" for users.
  • Please refer to the table below for advice on file formats.
  • If you require any technical support e.g. outputting the information into a suitable format and size, please contact your Institution’s IT department.

**Create with commonly-used codecs, and note the codec used in the supporting information legend. Test video files before submission, preferably on computers not used for its creation, to check for any compatibility issues. Wiley does not host codec files, or is responsible for supporting any video supporting information where the codec used is non-standard.

If a native dataset is supplied, the program and/or equipment used should be given. For specialist software (e.g. LaTeX), the software and version number used should be given.
